Why Give? A Christ Follower’s Call to Generosity

Have you ever wondered why we as believers give?

As Christians, we are called to give generously, reflecting the heart of God in our daily lives. Giving is not just a duty, but an opportunity to share the blessings we have received and to be part of God’s work in the world. Scripture provides a clear guide on why this is so essential.

In Luke 6:38, Jesus said, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.” Jesus promises that generosity brings blessings, though these blessings may not always come in material form. The heart of giving is rooted in love and obedience to God, not in seeking reward.

Theologian John Stott once said, “Giving is a natural overflow of a heart that has been touched by grace. When we recognize all that Christ has done for us, we cannot help but respond by giving to His mission and vision.” Stott shows us that giving is a reflection of our gratitude to God and a way we support the spreading of the Gospel and the growth of the Church. Through our giving, we become partners in God’s mission, allowing the Church to live on the EDGE: Evangelism, Discipleship, Generosity, and Empowerment.

2 Corinthians 9:7 reminds us, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Our giving should stem from joy, not obligation, knowing that we are sowing seeds that God will grow in His own way to see His kingdom grow.

Finally, Proverbs 11:25 tells us, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” As we bless others, we too are refreshed, finding fulfillment in being conduits of God’s love. Living generously is like drinking cool water. It nourishes and revives us all the way to the innermost parts of our life.

Through giving, we align our hearts with God’s and participate in His mission to love and care for the world.
